Eliminate Nukes

Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

On July 7th, 2017 the UN adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This historic accord bans nuclear weapons, and all activities related to them.

But the #nuclearban is only the first step. For a world free of nuclear weapons, we need everyone. http://nuclearban.org/

Under the Nuclear Ban Treaty States Cannot:

  • use or threaten to use
  • develop or test
  • possess nuclear weapons
  • assist others to do the above

Under the Nuclear Ban Treaty States Must:

  • provide assistance to victims of use and testing
  • re-mediate contaminated environments
  • eliminate their nuclear weapon program
  • remove foreign nuclear weapons from their territory

The U.S., Russia, China and other key powers with Nuclear Weapons have not signed - yet

  • One country has been known to dismantle their nuclear arsenal completely - South Africa apparently developed half a dozen nuclear weapons during the 1980s, but they were dismantled in the early 1990s. Hurrah!
  • But 9 countries - Russia, U.S., France, China, U.K., Pakistan, India, Israel, North Korea - today possess 14,575 Nukes; and they have not signed this treaty

5 things that YOU can do:

1. RALLY A BROAD, STRONG MOVEMENT, PARTICPATE

To stop nuclear weapons, we need everyone: doctors, unions, diplomats, activists, moms, dads, students, friends... and you!

2. TELL THE STORIES OF SURVIVORS OF NUCLEAR USE AND WEAPONS TESTING

The way we talk about nuclear weapons must reflect their real, unacceptable effects on human beings. If we are going to eliminate nuclear weapons, we need to emphasize the humanitarian risk and share the stories of the survivors of nuclear testing and use.

3. PRESSURE YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO SUPPORT THE NUCLEAR BAN TREATY

Representatives, mayors, city councilors; elected officials are in a key position to promote the Treaty in every country, pushing for signing and ratification or promoting it abroad. Hundreds around the world have already taken the Parliamentary Pledge. Encourage your representatives to do the same.

4. SHAME & ISOLATE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE OR ENDORSE NUCLEAR WEAPONS

  • Every time someone speaks up against nuclear weapons and says: "I believe nuclear weapons are inhumane, immoral and illegal. All countries should join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons" it chips away at their legitimacy. So say it, loud and often. And if you're in a country that endorses nuclear weapons, demand change!
  •  9 countries - Russia, U.S., France, China, U.K., Pakistan, India, Israel, North Korea - today possess 14,575 Nukes; and they have not signed this treaty

5. STOP INVESTMENTS IN NUCLEAR WEAPONS

Under the Nuclear Ban Treaty it will not only be illegal to produce nuclear weapons, it will also be illegal to bankroll them. Major banks around the world have already chosen not to invest in companies that engage in nuclear weapons activities. Ramp up the pressure so they #DontBankontheBomb
